Habitat Calaveras’ Board of Directors Advocate for Affordable Housing

By Published On: April 25, 2024

Members of Habitat for Humanity Calaveras’ Board of Directors recently took part in Advocacy Days at the state capitol, organized by Habitat for Humanity California. The aim was to advocate for ongoing state funding for affordable housing. A total of 10 policies were brought into coalition, currently in progress. Gregg Smith, Diane Follain, and Gary Hambly engaged directly with lawmakers and policymakers. They discussed the significance of affordable housing initiatives, shared insights from their field experiences, and advocated for legislation supporting Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building decent, affordable homes for those in need.

President of the Board of Directors, Gregg Smith, remarked, “It was an incredible experience to meet elected officials and share our story. Every person we met showed enthusiasm for Habitat for Humanity. More importantly, Gary, Diane, and I highlighted how the funds they were voting on directly impact Calaveras. Thanks to these policies, we secured $10 million for our Eureka Oaks project.”

Advocacy Days provided Habitat for Humanity Calaveras with a platform to amplify its voice, collaborate with other housing advocates, and work towards systemic change addressing housing challenges in California. The advocacy efforts of our board members influence policy decisions, raise awareness about housing issues, and contribute to creating a more equitable and sustainable housing landscape in the state.

We appreciate Gregg, Diane, and Gary’s dedication to advancing the organization’s goals. Their commitment to championing systemic issues in affordable housing is inspiring to us all.
