9/11 Day of Service: Thanking Calaveras County’s First Responders

By Published On: October 11, 2026

On September 11, 2001, the world watched ordinary people run toward danger to help others. This year, Habitat for Humanity Calaveras marked the anniversary with a 9/11 Day of Service. We turned our attention to the people who do that same work here, every single day: our local firefighters, law enforcement officers, and first responders.

A day of delivering gratitude

Our staff and volunteers spent the day on the road, visiting fire departments, police departments, the sheriff’s office, and ambulance stations across Calaveras County. From Arnold to Valley Springs and the communities in between, we delivered 50 pizzas, 200+ homemade cookies and sweets, and a stack of handwritten messages. The goal was simple: to let the people who keep us safe know they are seen.

A community effort

None of it would have happened without our community partners. Mike’s Pizza in Angels Camp, Costco in Riverbank, and Grocery Outlet in Valley Springs all stepped up to help us feed the people who protect us. Thank you for backing this project.

Cards from the next generation

Students at Mark Twain Elementary and Copperopolis Elementary collaborated with us on the project. They poured their hearts onto paper, creating 147 handmade appreciation cards filled with crayon flames, hearts, and “thank you”s. At every station we visited, those cards showed responders that their community loves them, and that even our youngest neighbors notice what they do.

The people behind the day

Our volunteers spent hours baking, wrapping, and delivering with their own hands. Our staff organized every detail. Together they turned a day of remembrance into a day of action. At Habitat Calaveras, we believe building a strong community goes beyond building homes. It means showing up for one another. First responders show up for us on our hardest days, and a day of service is one small way to show up for them.
